Spotify captures the musical moments that have defined your year, compiling them into the widely celebrated Spotify Wrapped.

This personalised annual analysis, launched in 2016, has been imitated by various industries, from streaming platforms like Apple Music to unexpected players like the Washington Post, Duolingo, Reddit, and Nintendo.

The presentation, adorned with customisable, vibrant graphics perfect for Instagram Stories, adds an authentic and characterful touch, contributing to its viral success.

Over the years, the popularity of Spotify Wrapped has soared, with 30 million users in 2017 and a staggering 120 million in 2021.

In 2022, a spokesperson informed TIME that more than 156 million users engaged with Wrapped.

Its appeal has transcended its original purpose, with even U.S. senators and Australian federal police creating memes around this year-end phenomenon.

As we usher in the 2023 Spotify Wrapped, here’s a guide on how to access your 2023 Wrapped. To embark on this musical journey, a Spotify subscription is a must.

The latest app version will likely lead you directly to Spotify Wrapped when it’s released.

If not, users on desktop or mobile can simply type “Wrapped” in the search bar or locate Spotify’s Wrapped button on the homepage.

Spotify Wrapped Involves

The intricate process behind Spotify Wrapped involves collecting data throughout the year, with the 2023 analysis spanning from January to a few weeks before the launch date on November 29th.

The spokesperson notes that the cutoff date is intentionally kept as late as possible for a personalised experience, favouring songs and albums released earlier in the year.

For a song or podcast to be included in the statistics, users must listen for 30 minutes or more.

The much-anticipated year-end statistics, including top albums, songs, and artists, are based on aggregated stream counts, while the top podcasts rely on unique listener numbers.

Private sessions or “incognito mode” don’t contribute to the lists but are considered in the “total minutes listened.”

Now, onto the winners of 2023!

Taylor Swift claims the title of the most-streamed artist globally, surpassing Bad Bunny with over 26.1 billion streams since January 1.

Bad Bunny, the reigning champion since 2020, falls to second place, followed by The Weeknd, Drake, and Mexican singer Peso Pluma.

While Swift takes the artist’s crown, Bad Bunny’s 2022 album, “Un Verano Sin Ti,” maintains its position as the most-streamed album for the second consecutive year.

Swift’s “Midnights” secures second place, followed by SZA’s “SOS.”

The most-streamed song of the year globally is Miley Cyrus’s “Flowers” accumulating over 1.6 billion streams.

SZA’s “Kill Bill” and Harry Styles’s “As It Was” claim second and third place, with Jungkook’s “Seven (feat. Latto)” and “Ella Baila Sola” by Peso Pluma and Eslabon Armado rounding out the list.

On the podcast front, “The Joe Rogan Experience” continues its reign as the most consumed Spotify podcast for the fourth consecutive year.

The Journey of Spotify Wrapped

In 2013 with the “Year in Review,” later evolving into the more playful “Wrapped” in 2016. Each iteration introduces creative features based on user data, such as “audio auras” and “listening personality types.”

This year, Spotify Wrapped offers “Me in 2033,” assigning a “listening character” based on your habits, and “Sound Town,” matching users to a city based on their listening and shared artist affinity.

These imaginative data presentations have made Spotify Wrapped easily shareable across social media.

Notably, the excitement extends beyond users; artists, including Dionne Warwick, John Mayer, and Lizzo, have actively joined in, recording special messages for their listeners and participating in the campaign.

In a 2021 interview with Variety, Spotify’s Vice President and Global Executive Creative Director, Alex Bodman, remarked on the unexpected success, saying:

I don’t think we had any idea that people would want to share it so much; it was first built as a loyalty play.”
